During the Vietnam War, mechanised units commonly used chain-link fencing as improvised standoff armour - often referred to as ''car ports.'' Mounted 1-2 feet in front of vehicle hulls, the mesh was intended to disrupt or prematurely detonate the piezoelectric fuzes of incoming PG-7 series RPG rounds before impact. When the geometry wasn't right for a clean hit, the round could be physically stopped by the links - the warhead's piezoelectric crystal failing to generate sufficient charge to fire. Soldiers called these duds ''Lucky Crystals'': armed, volatile, and requiring only the slightest disturbance to detonate.
The two included RPG-7 warheads can be positioned wherever the scene demands - lodged in chain-link screening, lying in the dirt near a fighting position, or tucked into a diorama as a reminder that not every shot goes to plan. Rolls of fencing were easy to transport and could be installed in minutes, making them a practical field modification.
Chain-link was also widely used for perimeter fencing around base camps, often combined with pickets and barbed wire.

The same expedient principles continue to appear in modern conflicts, where units reinforce vehicles, harden overnight positions, and create temporary defensive screens using locally available materials.
The chain-link material is flexible and can be displayed rolled for vehicle stowage or unrolled to create defensive screening or perimeter fencing. The included M8A1 landing mat sections allow you to depict reinforced hardstanding beneath vehicles or as ground stabilisation in temporary harbour positions.
All components are 3D printed in high-detail resin and are supplied ready for cleanup, painting, and weathering.
