The 333SP marked Ferrari's return to the sports car racing in 1994, having left the scene for 21 years since entering the 312PB in 1973. The decision was influenced by Giampiero Moretti, a racing driver and also the founder of the company MOMO (well known for making various auto parts and racing gear) - with IMSA (International Motor Sport Association) announcing a new prototype category in 1994 Moretti saw this as a chance and persuaded Ferrari to create a car for the category.
The car was designed by Dallara, a subsidiary of Ferrari. It used the F130 engine, which was a modified version of the V12 engine that would be later used on the street car F50. The chassis was a flat bottom chassis with heavy amounts of carbon fiber, and featured push-rod suspensions much like the ones found in Formula 1 cars.
Ferrari did not enter the cars themselves, but instead passed them on to various private teams. It debuted during a race in North America in 1994, and went on to win 5 races for the season. In the following season of 1995 it managed to win 12 hours of Sebring, along with a few other races which allowed it to take championship for the season.
The 333SP would continue to race in 24 hours of Daytona for the next following years, but would not take championship until 1998, ending Ferrari's 27 year Daytona victory drought. At the same time, it marked Moretti's first victory in Daytona ever after 16 tries since his first entry in 1970 with the 512S. Moretti would eventually go on to win the 6 hours of Watkins Glen before retiring, putting an end to his driving career after about 40 years. A total of 40 chassis were built for the 333SP, with various involved with races up until 2002.
