The Dornier Do 217 twin-engine high-wing bomber was widely used by the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Versatile and flexible, it was able to carry out, in its various versions, bombing missions, attack surface targets and night fighter missions. The Dornier Do-217K was characterized in particular by a strengthened fuselage, a revised wing surface and more powerful engines. In more detail, it was designed to carry and use the Ruhrstahl SD 1400 ''Fritz X'' radio-guided bomb, a true innovation for the time, housed in an underwing pylon. With this configuration, the Dornier Do-217K was used mainly in the Mediterranean theater. On 9 September 1943, the Italian battleship ''Roma'' was hit and sunk by a Fritz X bomb off the coast of Sardinia.
