Developed by Bell Helicopter as an evolution of the "Cobra" attack helicopter, the AH-1W "Super Cobra" entered service in the 1980s and was used in several theaters of operation, including military operations in the Gulf and Iraq. Equipped with two powerful General Electric turboshaft engines, allowing it to reach speeds of over 280 km/h, it is characterized by its high flexibility of operation. The crew consists of two people, the pilot and the weapons operator, seated in tandem to optimize visibility during combat. It can be equipped with TOW anti-tank missiles, AGM-114 Hellfire guided missiles, and unguided rockets. The AH-1W was used primarily by the United States Marine Corps to support ground troops during amphibious assault operations.
