The F-15 Eagle was developed in the 1970s to equip the US Air Force's flight departments with an advanced, high-performance fighter. Its aerodynamic airframe was used to develop the F-15E Strike Eagle, a two-seat all-weather fighter-bomber. Designed for ground attack, bombing, and interdiction missions, it entered USAF service in the late 1980s. It retains the characteristics of the original F-15 design, such as the twin tailfins and robust mid-wing, but adopts a tandem two-seater cabin capable of housing the Weapons System Officer for route management, target tracking, and the use of electronic countermeasures. It was used in numerous operational activities starting with the Desert Shield and Desert Storm campaigns in the early 1990s.
