The M-47 Patton medium tank was developed and distributed to American armored units in the first half of the 1950s. Compared to its predecessors, such as the M-46, it had significantly superior performance, with greater protection and increased firepower provided by the 90mm M3 gun installed in the turret. The tank weighed approximately 46 tons in combat order and was equipped with a powerful 810 hp Continental V12 air-cooled engine that allowed the vehicle to reach a speed of 45 km/h. In addition to the United States, it was used by numerous NATO armies during the Cold War. It proved reliable and robust and operated extensively in the armored units of numerous European armies until the 1980s. It was also used in combat in various theaters of operation from the Middle East to the Indo-Pakistani conflict.
