The Cromwell Tank Cruiser was developed during World War II by the British Army to replace the aging Crusader as a "cruiser tank." The Cromwell was characterized by a very high speed, reaching over 60 km/h, and great maneuverability. This speed, often limited to avoid excessive wear on the tank's mechanics, especially its suspension, was nevertheless combined with reasonable armor and good armament. The turret-mounted 75 mm main gun was indeed powerful enough in engagements against similar armored vehicles and could employ the same ammunition as other Allied tanks such as the US Sherman. The Cromwell also fulfilled the effective role of providing close infantry support.
