The HH-53C Jolly Green was developed by Sikorsky as a variant of the CH-53 Sea Stallion heavy helicopter. It entered service with the U.S. Air Force in the late 1960s. It was designed to perform highly operationally effective CSAR (Search and Rescue) missions in combat zones. Compared to the previous version, it was equipped with an in-flight refueling probe, additional fuel tanks, reinforced armor, and the option of being equipped with additional defensive armament. Particular attention was paid to improving the radio equipment needed to coordinate operational activities with other support aircraft, such as refuelers or attack and support helicopters, necessary for the safe search for downed or missing pilots. Robust, reliable, and with a long flight range, it was widely used in the Vietnam War.
