The career of the "Houston" started when she was launched and named on 11.12.1976 at the Verolme shipyards in Heusden. Then on 22.4.1977 she was delivered to the Smit international shipping company at Rotterdam under ship's number 935. The "Houston" belongs in the same up to 16,000 ihp class as the similar "New York", which was based on the earlier 22,000 ihp "Smit Rotterdam" and "Smit London" class. This ocean-going tugboat has a length of 67.50 m, a beam of 14.55 m and a draught of 6.23 m. The "Houston" is driven by two 6-cylinder Stork Werkspoor diesel engines with a capacity of 2 x 4,600 pk = 2 x 3,380 kW. The "Houston" reaches an operational speed of 14 knots and has a bollard pull of 120 tonnes. Today the former "Houston" is stationed in Den Helder as the Coastguard Vessel "Waker".
