Puglia aqueduct
The Puglia aqueduct is the public water-drinking supply infrastructure of the Puglia Region and some municipalities of Campania.
Its construction, strongly desired, among others, by Antonio Jatta, was launched in 1906, with the intent to solve the millennial problem of water shortage in the region: already Orazio described Puglia as a thirsty land: Siderum Settiv Vapor Siticulosae Apuliae (the AFA of Puglia Sitibonda arrives
In fact, since it is not the Apulian underground rich in easily removable water, rainwater was used in tanks, which are not guaranteed sufficient quantities and the necessary prevention from epidemics.
The work was fonded by some Apulian deputies who obtained the creation at first of a study commission to which the financing and the assignment of the concession works followed, following an international race.
The realization of the work was possible thanks to the use of substantial financial means (125 million lire of the time) and materials, so that he had to predict the unrealization of the same.
During fascism, other logs were made at the service of areas not yet reached by the aqueduct: among these, the main one is called great Lecce siphon and constitutes the extension of the main channel to the monumental waterfall that ends in the sea, occasionally used as a terminal discharge Of the great aqueduct work, built at the foot of the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Leuca, the last propagine of Salento. The terminal opera was inaugurated shortly before the beginning of the Second World War by the same Benito Mussolini, which for the occasion donated the Roman column installed along the descent to the sea.
