One of the first military trucks produced under this plan was the Krupp Kfz.70 6x4 light truck, designated as the L2 H43, and commonly referred to by the troops as the "Krupp Protze." It was originally designed as an artillery tractor and general-purpose truck. However, several variants were later developed, including telephone trucks, staff cars, communication vehicles, and ammunition carriers.
The Kfz.70 entered service in 1934. It was powered by a 53-horsepower Krupp Boxer engine, with a top speed of 70 km/h and an operational range of 450 kilometres. The vehicle weighed 3 tonnes and could carry a payload of 1,150 kilograms. A later version, the L2 H143, was equipped with an upgraded 60-horsepower engine, though performance remained largely unchanged.
The Kfz.70 was first used in the 1939 invasion of Poland, which marked the beginning of World War II. It subsequently saw action in the 1940 campaign in France and the 1941 German invasion of the Soviet Union. A small number of Kfz.70s were also deployed in the North African theatre between 1941 and 1943.
Due to its high fuel consumption and production cost, only around 7,000 units were built between 1934 and 1941. The multipurpose truck typically carried a driver, an assistant, and ten soldiers. It was used to tow light anti-tank guns, light anti-aircraft guns, ammunition trailers, and small generators. When towing, the crew was reduced to five.
Although the Krupp Kfz.70 was highly versatile, several specialised variants were developed with different body configurations and new designations-for example, the Kfz.21 staff car, the Kfz.69 artillery tractor, and the Kfz.81 towing vehicle for 2 cm Flak anti-aircraft guns. Although production ceased in early 1941, the Krupp Kfz.70 remained in service throughout World War II until the war's end.
